WHAT IS A TRANSFER SWITCH AND WHY DO I NEED ONE?

Simply put, a transfer switch is like a set of train tracks that directs your electrical connection. It switches the source of electricity for your home or business to either the utility company, OR to the generator, depending on which source is providing power. This device is needed so that your generator does not "back-feed" and send the power that it creates, down the line and harm the lineman working on downed power lines and poles. There are a few different types. The most common types of transfer switches that we sell and service are listed below.

MANUAL TRANSFER

Manual transfer switches are just that... "manual". You have to be present and operating them, for them to work. You often have to have instructions or be familiar with the system. These are meant for use on specific equipment, or for a budget installation used in conjunction with a portable. We will install these when we are not booked up. WE DO NOT SELL PORTABLE GENERATORS, SORRY.

SELECT CIRCUIT

Select Circuit Transfer Switches are completely automatic switching, when paired with a generator. Even when you're not there, this will energize your home from the generator. Select Circuits let you "pick and choose" the circuits from other existing panels, which you would like to back-up with your generator. These are a great option if you have existing code issues with your structure, or if backing up the entire structure is just not a feasible option. The down-side to select circuit is that you are usually very limited by either the number of items, or the high draw of certain appliances that you are wanting to cover.

ENTIRE SERVICE

This series of transfer switches are completely automatic when paired with the proper generator. They are designed for switching large loads, often entire electrical panels or entire electrical services. These are the most common transfer switches that we install on a residence or commercial structure for our clients. When the power goes out, the generator starts up, and then it makes the transfer switch move the house from the utility power, to the generator power until the utility power returns, even if you're not there!
